Planning for Possibilities                                    Week of Sept 12-16

Intent/hopes for children’s learning this week: (outcomes)
Science- Explore the world using our five senses
1:1 Become aware of our five senses
1:2 Develop and use vocabulary associated with the five senses
Materials and environmental aspects to consider when supporting children’s learning
Big Books- 1. My Five Senses-A Lion’s Tale, 2. See, Hear, Touch, Taste, Smell
Poster/Chart- My Five Senses (visual display), Mystery Item- avacado, Chart paper- class list to record children’s guesses as to what the mystery item is, Sticky notes- for anecdotal notes of how the children describe the mystery item, paper for children’s drawings/writing/representation, camera to photograph children exploring.

Introduce Big Book- A Lion’s Tale, small groups- explore and describe outside of avocado. Draw/represent/write on paper. Ask questions- encourage vocabulary related to five senses. Record discussions on sticky notes
Read Big Book- See, Hear, Touch, Taste, Smell. Small groups- explore and describe inside of avocado. Draw/represent/write on paper. Ask questions- encourage vocabulary related to five senses. Record discussions on sticky notes
Documentation


On chart paper- model writing- record children’s guess as to what the mystery item is. Photograph children exploring outside and inside of the avocado. Write anecdotal notes of what children say as they explore
Educational Displays


Create bulletin board display-title “Exploring With Our Five Senses” Display children’s drawings. On their drawing, include a photograph of child exploring the avocado. Add a caption recording what the children said as they explored the avocado. Later include items in child’s portfolio
Differentiated Instruction

Reflections/Summary
Will review five senses again in a few weeks when we explore a coconut and many more items through the year. Put avocado seed on display in the science area. Connect avocado to letter/sound Aa that we did this week (Jolly Phonics)
